START UP's Noon-Gil - Does it really exist?

Tuesday, November 24, 2020

For fans of Netflix K-Drama Start Up, Noon-gil is definitely no longer a new word to you, agree?

Yes, Noon Gil is an application created by Nam Do San after finding out about Seo Dal Mi’s grandmother (Mrs Choi) heart-breaking situation, whose eyesight is getting worse day by day.

"Noon-gil, inspired by guide dogs, is an AI-based service developed to assist the visually impaired (through voice) in their daily activities" (Seo Dalmi, Ep 11).

In Episode 8, Mrs Choi used Noon-gil to read out a passage from her bible. Not only that, in the drama, Noon-gil is able to read one’s facial expression, identify people and objects, read text and even detect things like money notes.

While (unfortunately) Noon-gil is not available in real life, there are some applications (available on Google’s Android and Apple IOS) that functions almost similar to Noon-gil and were invented to help people who are visually impaired.

1. Seeing AI by Microsoft Corporation
Note: We had tried out Seeing AI and we were actually impressed by the functions and its accuracy.

As seen in the video, Seeing AI can identify different scenes, colours, handwriting, text as well as read a person's expression! All you need to do is to download the app and take a picture of items, text, documents, etc and the app will read it out aloud for you.

2. VocalEyes AI by VocalEyes AI Inc
3. Airpoly Vission by V7 Ltd
Although the result is not really accurate, these are indeed interesting apps and no doubt they can be useful and helpful if the further developed. Perhaps, SamSan Tech could lend a hand? 😁

Ps, let us know if there are other similar apps!
