Campus Romance K-drama 'Rookie Cops' Featuring Kang Daniel and Chae Soo Bin
Monday, February 07, 2022
Following hot on the heels of this month’s new Disney+ APAC content announcement, fans of Korean dramas are preparing to buckle in for a thrilling ride-along with the debut of Rookie Cops on Disney+ Hotstar later this month. Centered around a group of freshmen at the Korean National Police Academy, Rookie Cops features an exciting ensemble, including Kang Daniel and Chae SooBin, two of the hottest stars in Korea today. Rookie Cops is directed by Kim Byung-soo (He Is Psychometric, The Bride of Habaek, and Nine), and will debut on Disney+ Hotstar on January 26.
When the Korean National Police Academy welcomes a group of excited freshmen who dream of becoming cops, their joy of qualifying for the academy is quickly dashed when they find themselves subject to grueling daily training and strictly enforced rules. Having entered the academy at the top of his class, Wi Seunghyun (Kang Daniel) carries high expectations on his shoulders, while feisty and decisive Ko Eunkang (Chae SooBin) was only admitted during the second round of admissions. Throughout the series, Wi and Ko find themselves butting heads at
every turn as they become more and more embroiled in a number issues at the academy that could threaten their chances of graduation.
Rookie Cops is an exciting new series that captures the essence of campus romance between Kang Daniel and Chae SooBin. With a hugely successful musical career under his belt, Kang makes his acting debut as Wi Seunghyun, a student with top marks who can’t stand injustice. While Wi initially appears to be well on his way to becoming a top police officer, his continued encounters with campus troublemaker Ko Eunkang (Chae SooBin), takes his life on a series of unexpected turns.
Stepping into the roles of young freshmen along with Kang and Chae are Lee Sin Young, Park You Na, Park Seong Jun, Min Do Hee, Kim Woo Seok, and Cheon Young Min. The stellar cast also includes veteran actors Sohn Changmin, Lee Munsik, Seo Yi sook, Jeong Young ju, and Jea Su weon.
Rookie Cops was announced in October 2021 as part of The Walt Disney Company’s APAC Content Showcase, where it unveiled 28 new APAC titles and ambitious plans to greenlight over 50 APAC Originals by 2023. A further slew of exciting new Asian content was announced in January this year when it was revealed that titles including Anita (Director’s Cut), King of Savvy, Taiwan Crime Stories and A Lifelong Journey would also be joining the service in the near future.
Fans of Korean language content looking to enjoy fresh storytelling in advance of Rookie Cops’ January 26 debut can also enjoy other Disney+ APAC originals including Snowdrop, as well as the soon-to-be-released: Grid, Kiss Sixth Sense, and Moving.

In the newly released trailer, two unique features of the series – the KMA and office romance – are reflected. People are sensitive to the weather, as it connects to our everyday lives filled with last-minute changes and unexpected variables. Likewise, it is impossible to foresee the love between the two protagonists – Ha-kyung and Si-woo – amidst the many twists and turns working in the KMA.
Forecasting Love and Weather premieres 12 February on Netflix, just in time for Valentine’s Day.
Jung Hae-in (Im Soo-ho) and Jisoo (Eun Yeong-ro) |
Moreover, ‘Snowdrop’ is directed and written by the very talented Director Jo Hyun-tak and writer Yoo Hyun-mi, who have worked together previously for the hit drama ‘SKY Castle’, and this further heightened expectations even before its premier.
Kim Hye-Yoon (Bun-ok) and Yoon Se-Ah (Pi Seung-hee) |
We would say that ‘Snowdrop’ has successfully captivated audience worldwide— streaming on Disney+ Hotstar, every episode had been an emotional roller-coaster as we watched the main characters fight for their love with lives at stake.
We believe that the highlight of the drama is the ending of Episode 4, where Lim Soo-ho raised the gun to Yeong-Ro’s head. For me, that particular scene left me at the edge of my seat as it marked the start of all the chaos, heartbreaks and painful betrayals the protagonists had to overcome.
Plot twists after plot twists, the splendid acting of the supporting cast also made us feel how desperate and burnt out the characters were in the hostage situation. Every cast member did a marvellous job carrying their respective roles to build up the storyline and this absolutely left viewers hooked onto the drama.
The main cast, Jung Hae-In and Jisoo, have also been highly praised for their synergy and great chemistry on set and even in the behind-the-scenes footages. ‘Snowdrop’ also marks the BLACKPINK member’s first ever lead in a K-drama series! Jisoo has also been making headlines with her impressive acting talent and hopefully we can expect to see her in more K-dramas in the future!
The final 3 episodes were broadcasted consecutively on the last weekend of January, in consideration to other programmes that were rescheduled due to the Lunar New Year holidays. Like any classic korean drama, we believed that the protagonists would have a happy ending. Unfortunately, ‘Snowdrop’ has proven us wrong about this. The heart-wrenching moments lasted till the final episode and it led to a painfully tragic ending.
Nevertheless, we would say still that ‘Snowdrop’ was indeed a ‘One-Way Ticket’ to the hearts of the global audience! Kudos to Jung Hae-in, Jisoo and all cast for this amazing project of ‘Snowdrop’. Viewers will also ‘always remember’ this piece of work by JTBC and Disney+ Hotstar.
If you have not watched 'Snowdrop' yet, do check out all the episodes, now available on Disney+ Hotstar!
Black Knight
Kim Woo Bin To Return For Netflix Upcoming Series 'Black Knight' - Teaming Up with E Som & Kang You-Seok
Thursday, January 13, 2022
Netflix has confirmed the production of Black Knight with director Cho Ui-seok and a mega cast lineup of Kim woo-bin, Kang you-seok and E Som. In this new Netflix Series, Cho and Kim woo-bin reunite after their blockbuster hit film Master.
Black Knight is set in an air polluted world in 2071 where people depend on respirator masks to breathe. Only one percent of the human race has survived, and a strict social stratification has been established in the deserted lands of the Korean Peninsula. Delivery drivers play a crucial role within this system, and for refugees, becoming a delivery driver is their only hope for survival. Amid such chaos, Black Knight tells the story of a legendary delivery driver “5-8” with exceptional battle skills and a refugee “Sawol” who dreams of following in his footsteps.
Black Knight is based on the popular webtoon of the same title that won the E-IP Award at the Asian Film Market — an event connecting web drama, web novel, webtoon, story creators to entertainment industry specialists who can revamp them into different formats. The story garnered attention for its creative premise, which reimagines a familiar profession, in this case, Delivery Drivers, into a unique group responsible for the survival of the human race.
Cho spearheads the production to turn the story into an action-packed series. Through his past works – Master, Cold Eyes, and The World of Silence – Cho demonstrated a knack for storytelling, action sequencing, and stylish cinematography.
Kim woo-bin, who has mesmerized viewers in films such as Master, Twenty and The Con Artists and in dramas such as Uncontrollably Fond and Inheritors, stars as the legendary delivery driver “5-8.” Anticipations are high for Black Night as Kim reunites with Cho for the first time after Master.
On the other hand, Sawol – a refugee boy and an admirer of “5-8” who dreams of becoming a delivery driver – will be played by rising star Kang you-seok. Kang has broadened his spectrum and is on the fast track to stardom with his performances in dramas such as The Grotesque Mansion: The Original, Light on Me, Start-Up and Once Again.
Lastly, we have E Som who will play Seolah, a military officer at the Defense Intelligence Command. Seolah saves Sawol’s life and cares for him like her own family. E Som’s acting caliber has been proven for her transformative performances in the films Samjin Company English Class, Inseparable Bros, Microhabitat and the drama Taxi Driver. Overall, under Cho's guidance, the synergy among the stellar cast and portrayal of unique characters promises to captivate viewers.
Black Knight will be released to audiences worldwide, only on Netflix.

A drama centered around the district of Gangnam and Seo Cho-hee, a woman who struggles to improve the quality of her life with a house. It tells a realistic family message that happiness is not about the house but is about the family that live in it.
In Southeast Asia, Korean shows are very loved and some research has found they are watched more than Hollywood productions. In the last three months, on average, four of the top 10 titles on Netflix in Southeast Asia have been Korean. Why is that? Some have pointed to the appeal of storylines which show Asian heroines striving to express themselves personally and professionally — a theme which perhaps resonates with women in more traditional Southeast Asian societies.
But it is the quality and the diversity of the stories that impress me the most. They can range in genre and subject matter — from opposites-attract romantic comedies like Crash Landing On You and Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha to military-themed dramas such as Descendants of the Sun and D.P.
And they can have wildly innovative storylines, like Move To Heaven, which is about trauma cleaners — incidentally, its star Tang Joon-sang is half-Malaysian — and the upcoming The Silent Sea (main picture), which sees Bae Doo-na and Gong Yoo heading to the moon on a perilous mission. This creative imagination, coupled with top quality acting and production values, has made hallyu — or the “Korean wave” — a phenomenon, not only in Southeast Asia, but across the world.
There will be even more surprising and creative stories in the next few months with Hellbound, a mystery thriller with supernatural elements and the first Korean series to be invited to screen at the Toronto International Film Festival; as well as My Name, a female-centred action noir adventure starring Nevertheless’ Han So-hee as you’ve never seen her before.
For Malobika Banerji, Content Director, Southeast Asia, however, the most rewarding Korean shows are those that provoke her to think deeper about societal issues. This is why she's looking forward to Squid Game even before the release, which addresses social and economic inequality, a topic that is top of mind in many countries in the world, including Southeast Asia.
Ultimately, it doesn’t really matter why we love these shows. What matters is there will be more, with Netflix’s $500M investment in Korean content this year. This means, no matter where you are — in Bangkok, Hanoi, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Manila or Singapore — you will continue to get the best of Korea, whether it’s on-the-go on your mobile device or sitting comfortably in your living room. All you need to do is sit back, relax and press “play”.

Gianna Jun and Ju Ji-hoon Join-Hands to Unveil Secrets Hidden at 'Jirisin'
Sunday, September 19, 2021
iQiyi announces upcoming original K-series 'Jirisan' featuring Gianna Jun and
Ju Ji-hoon. It tells a story of how an experienced national park ranger (played by Gianna Jun) and a rookie ranger (played by Ju Ji-hoon) unveil secrets hidden in the mountain. The show is set to release in October on iQiyi International app or iQ.com and simulcast with Korea in October.
Jirisan also released an initial poster today, in which Jun, playing a national park ranger, walks into a forest engulfed in flames. In the mountains like Jirisan, crises come from downpours, floods, and fires. She has to take risks and rescue victims out at the frontline. The tagline on the poster also lists the first principle for rangers: “Our job is to return alive from dangers”. A mysterious silhouette in the title font is a clue to secrets in the mountains. It adds another layer of suspense before the premiere.
The story is based on interviews with national park workers by writer Kim Eun-hee. “When I wrote Jirisan at the beginning,” said Kim, “it didn’t focus on rangers. I was more interested in stories about mountaineers. However, I was more intrigued about their work after interviews.” Many amateurs often get injured or stranded as they let their guard down after reaching mountaintops. Rangers, instead, believe that “the top objective of mountaineering is leaving alive”. Even under downpours, snowstorms, landslides, typhoons, and other inferior weather conditions, rangers are committed to rescuing victims in the mountains. “They are really the mountain keepers,” said Kim.
Don't forget to catch 'Jirisin' in October on iQiyi.
