A Closer Look at the OST of Hospital Playlist S2

Tuesday, July 06, 2021

The second season of Hospital Playlist S2 is everything we hoped for and more, and we’re so happy to see everyone again. In addition to the relatable and heartwarming stories, the soundtrack boosts the feels and perfectly complements each episode. Since the soundtrack often consists of covers of popular Korean songs from the ‘90s and ‘00s, it adds a sense of nostalgia and familiarity.

Just like the first season, the songs from the new season are climbing up music charts and hitting all the right notes. Let’s take a closer look at the songs’ lyrics and see how they tie into the episodes.

Ep. 1: “Rain and You” - Lee Mu-jin (Original by Park Joong-hoon)
“Rain and You” itself is actually an OST from the 2006 film Radio Star. Just like the song, it’s raining when we see the band perform the song while Jang Gyeo-ul (Shin Hyun-been) talks with Yeon-u’s mother (Cha Chung-hwa). Yeon-u’s mother confesses she likes visiting the hospital because she’s able to talk about her child there and be called Yeon-u’s mother. It’s heartbreaking as we understand how much she misses her deceased child. Also, Lee Ik-jun (Cho Jung-seok) and Chae Song-hwa (Jeon Mi-do) later listen to the song (Lee Mu-jin’s version) in the car.
The lyrics say “I don’t miss you anymore” and show conflicting feelings with “I don’t understand/ Why I feel this way/ I cry when it rains/ Just like the day I left you/ Many years ago.” The song goes on “I’m okay now, I’ve given up on love/ Why am I/ Crying like a fool?” It shows how tough and lasting heartbreak can be. “I know you won’t come back to me/ I hate myself/ For still being hung up on you/ How much longer/ Will my heart ache?” We see two types of heartbreak in this episode: maternal heartbreak from Yeon-u’s mother and romantic heartbreak experienced by Ik-jun.

Ep. 2: “Autumn Outside the Post Office” - Kim Dae-myeung (Original by Yoon Do-hyun)
This marks the first time Kim Dae-myeung sang a song on his own for the show, and he sounds great despite not being a professional singer. This song, which was originally released in 1994, talks about standing in front of a post office in autumn and seeing the yellow ginkgo leaves fly through the wind. It goes on to reflect “All the beautiful things in the world/ How long will they last?/ Like the flowers that withstood/ The summer rain showers/ And the trees that withstood/ The snowstorm last winter/ Can everything under the sky/ Stand alone?”
Prior to the band scene, we see each of the doctor friends encountering difficulties while treating their patients. Kim Dae-myeung’s character Yang Seok-hyeong, in particular, chose to help Kim Su-jeong despite the statistics not being in her favor. Unfortunately, Kim Su-jeong’s baby was not able to make it, resulting in a tragic moment. The song suits the episode perfectly as Kim Su-jeong and her husband are comforted by Seok-hyeong’s text and vice versa.

Ep. 3: “I Like You” - Jang Beom June (original by Cho Yong-pil)
We see the band perform this upbeat track after Song-hwa talks to a patient’s brother who shares about how he ended up dating a friend who confessed to him. His situation is quite similar to Song-hwa’s and we know that Ik-jun’s confession made her feel uncomfortable at first, but she also enjoys his sense of humour and considers him a close friend. The lyrics say “I don’t know what love is yet/ I do not know/ But we are happy together/ Your confusing confession/ Makes my heart flutter/ But it’s too difficult to understand/ So I don’t like it.” This reflects how Song-hwa feels quite accurately.
The lyrics go on, “People have told me/ That they like my cute smile/ But not anymore/ I have a secret now/ But I like you/ This could be love.” These lyrics tie in to more than one couple as Ahn Jeong-won (Yoo Yeon-seok) and Jang Gyeo-ul are trying to keep their relationship a secret at the hospital. Likewise, Kim Jun-wan (Jung Kyung-ho) is keeping his girlfriend’s identity a secret from his friends. Who knows? Perhaps there’ll be another secret romance joining them soon.
