A Blockbuster to Watch and 'Remember' Lee Sung Min and Nam Joo Hyuk

The highly anticipated thriller film, Remember, is confirmed to stream on iQIYI this year. Starring Lee Sung Min and Nam Joo Hyuk, the film is directed by Lee Il Hyung, the former director of A Violent Prosecutor (2016).
The all-star credits roll doesn’t just end here–Remember is produced by Yoon Jong Bin, who also produced blockbusters such as Nameless Gangster (2012), Kundo (2014), and The Spy Gone North (2018) with production house Moonlight Pictures, who are the ones behind the recent hit Korean drama series Narco-Saints (2022). This film, which will plunge audiences into a fast-paced battle of wits, is also a remake of Atom Egoyan’s 2015 film of the same name.
Remember tells the story of Pil Joo, played by veteran actor Lee Sung Min, an Alzheimer's patient in his 80s who has vivid memories of the Japanese colonial rule in the early 1900s. As memories of his family who died during the war begin to fade, he becomes determined to devote the rest of his life to getting back at the pro-Japanese troops who killed them with an elaborate plan he formulated for 60 years. He recruits the help of his close friend and co-worker In Gyu (played by Nam Joo Hyuk), who is in his 20s and becomes his partner in the revenge plot. It is not long until In Gyu finds himself in trouble as he becomes the prime suspect of murder after being captured on a security camera at a crime scene. In a race against time and fading memories, Pil Joo attempts revenge while helping to clear In Gyu’s name.
Lee Il-Hyung, the director of Remember, shared that the context of the Japanese colonial period has left different impressions on Koreans and has been extensively covered in literature, film and television. “I wanted to portray this period not in a macroscopic view or as a recorded case that can be read in a textbook, but as a way to bridge modern outlook to that period,” he shared.
This marks the first collaboration between Lee Sung Min and Nam Joo Hyuk – two renowned actors that have been actively immersing themselves in huge projects in recent years. Lee Sung Min was catapulted into the spotlight with his award-winning performances in popular titles including Golden Time (2012), Misaeng: Incomplete Life (2014), and The Spy Gone North (2018), while Nam Joo Hyuk played the leading role in Who Are You: School 2015 (2015), Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-Joo (2016), and Start-Up (2021).

Remember is about breaking the conventions of a buddy comedy by bringing together an 80-something senior man with a 20-something young man as he goes on a long journey to get his revenge and how their friendship surpasses any generation gap,” said Director Lee.

Nam most recently played the main lead in the latest heartwarming series, Twenty Five Twenty One. The age gap between the two actors in real life also loosely parallels the huge age gap of 60 years between the main characters of the film, hence reflecting the thoughtful casting by director and screenwriter, Lee Il Hyung. The film would also feature Jung Man Sik (Escape from Mogadishu (2021), Vagabond (2019)) in a supporting role.

Remember will be available on iQIYI (www.iq.com and app) soon.
